The Benefits of an Online Personal Trainer

Working with an online personal trainer provides motivation, accountability, creativity and expert guidance in order to help you stay on track and achieve your goals.

Motivation

A lack of motivation is one of the most common obstacles that people face when trying to achieve their goals. This is especially true for fitness-related goals, as they require significant commitment, time, and energy. Making use of an online personal trainer to help you push harder is an excellent way to increase your dedication and fast-track your way to progress.

Importantly, an online personal trainer that is a kinesiologist has the required knowledge and expertise to know when and how to challenge you in a manner that is both safe and effective. They know what your body can do and can encourage you to test your limits in the safest, more productive way possible.

Accountability

We all live busy lives that demand we focus our attention, energy, and time in a thousand different ways. Fitting exercise into an already hectic schedule can sometimes feel like the last thing you want to do. That is where an online personal trainer comes in.

An online personal trainer holds you accountable to the commitments and goals that you set. They provide a structured schedule and plan that puts you on the path to success. Furthermore, they hold you to that plan by doing regular check-ins and making adjustments wherever necessary. With the guidance and accountability provided by a personal trainer, you can be sure that you’ll more easily reach your fitness goals.

Creative Workouts

Doing the same exercises over and over again can get repetitive and boring. It can also chip away at your motivation, making it even harder to want to exercise. But if you only know a handful of exercises or don’t have a robust understanding of exercise principles, it can be hard to move beyond your current routine.

An online personal trainer can provide you with variety and keep things fresh. Additionally, as our trainers are kinesiologists, they have more than just a vast repertoire of exercises. They also have a fundamental knowledge of movement to be able to design and modify exercises that are specifically suited to your wants and needs. This provides an almost unlimited number of ways to challenge yourself and ensures you’re having fun! You’ll never be bored by your workout again.

Expert Guidance

All of our online personal trainers are kinesiologists. Kinesiology is its own recognized field of scientific study – the study of human movement. Kinesiologists have to obtain a university degree to become a practitioner. To become a kinesiologist in British Columbia, you must go through a 4 to 5-year post-secondary degree program at an accredited university. After their degree is complete, kinesiologists must then join the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK) in order to become accredited.

A kinesiologist's expertise is broad and can be applied to many fitness, health and academic settings. A kinesiologist’s work is similar to a personal trainer when providing exercise advice and support, with the added benefit of undergoing years of education to obtain a highly extensive understanding of the human body. This is the reason why it is common practice for sports teams, health clinics and community centres to have kinesiologists on their teams.

How it Works?

These are the steps our online personal trainers take with each client.

Pre-Assessment

Prior to the first assessment, clients will fill out an intake form. This form will be in preparation for an initial assessment and it includes contact details, and general health and medical questions such as current fitness levels, stress levels, sleep quality, and past medical conditions.

Medical practitioners such as kinesiologists also require clients to fill a PAR-Q+ form to identify clients who might require a doctor’s recommendation to start exercise. Finally, your consent is required which entails reading and agreeing to our operating policies. Once this is done, your personal trainer has the information and the permissions they need to start working with you.

Assessment (First Session)

The very first step is to assess your past fitness experiences. Your personal trainer will ask how those experiences went, what worked and what didn’t. They’ll also ask about past injuries. These generative questions are important to build a full understanding of your wants and needs.

The next stage of the assessment looks at objective measures: range of motion, flexibility, strength, girth measurements, weight, and a functional movement screening. Some specialized personal training programs look at more in-depth measures such as body composition, VO2 max, or use of computer imaging. Be sure to ask your personal trainer if these tests are relevant to the type of training you’re looking for. For most clients, basic manual measurements are enough. The accuracy and type of information our personal trainers collect allows them to create a program that appropriately fits your specific wants and needs.

With baseline measurements obtained, you and your online personal trainer will set goals. These goals and timelines should be realistic, so we take into consideration your budget and schedule. Goals vary from client to client – some of our clients want a general fitness plan, so broader goals and longer time-lines are appropriate. In other cases, a client may have a specific goal in mind such as losing weight or preparing for an event.

Finally it’s time for the online personal trainer to create an individualized exercise program. This is the step that most people think about when imagining personal training. The exercise program might start during the assessment session if there is time, or during the second session.

On-going Sessions

You and your online personal trainer will work together collaboratively to reach your goals, setting a schedule that fits within your availability, budget, and needs. We have multiple session options to fit your schedule - including 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes.

Our online personal trainers continue to reassess each client periodically and check in on their goals. They make updates to your fitness program as needed. This ensures that progress is being made and your goals continue to be relevant, realistic, and timely. Reaching goals is all about the journey; your online personal trainer will be there along the way to guide you, encourage you, and motivate you.

How Much Does it Cost?

We've been in this business for almost 3 decades in Vancouver, and have long-standing relationships with independent and corporate personal trainers alike. A one hour, one on one session with an online personal trainer will run you anywhere from $70 to $120. Any less than $70 per session, and you can expect a personal trainer with less experience. More than $120, and you are in the elite-training category.

A tip for someone looking to save on costs is to buy personal training packages, which will decrease your cost per session. At Symmetrix, we have 12 and 24 session packages available. Buying a package of 24 sessions reduces your per-session rate by 18%.

I have an injury from right leg knee cap to my back on my right side that I have been struggling with since 2017. I am now able to do some running and have definitely gotten a lot stronger and more resilient. Symmetrix has been amazing.

I have loved training with Dash and the team at Symmetrix. My knee has not felt this strong with squatting and hiking in a long time.
